Founded nationally in 1935, Roto-Rooter Plumbing and Water Cleanup has grown into North America’s leading name in plumbing and drain services. Our local story began that same year when Don and Frances Smith brought the Roto-Rooter Plumbing and Water Cleanup franchise to the Mobile area. They started the business out of their living room, earning just $350 in their first month—but laying the foundation for decades of growth.
In 1989, their son Greg Smith took over the business, leading it through a period of expansion and innovation. By that time, the team had grown to over 20 employees. Today, the company remains proudly family-owned and operated. Greg’s daughter, Hannah, serves as Chief Operating Officer, and her sister, Libby, leads marketing efforts as Marketing Manager. Together, they continue the Smith family legacy of trusted service, hard work, and commitment to the community.
In 1933, Samuel Blanc created a funny-looking sewer cleaning machine from a 1/6 HP Maytag washing machine motor, roller skate wheels and 3/8″ cable to turn the blades. The device used a combination of special blades or “knives” to cut tree roots out of sewer lines. No digging was required. A year later, Sam’s wife Lettie christened the prototype the “Roto-Rooter.”
