AI in the Plumbing Industry: Working Smarter, Not Harder

When most people think about artificial intelligence, a plumbing company probably isn’t the first type of business that comes to mind. But AI in the plumbing industry is already here, and at Roto-Rooter Plumbing & Water Cleanup we believe staying successful over the long term means being willing to evolve while staying grounded in the values that built the company in the first place.

We are a third-generation, locally owned and operated business that has been serving our community since 1962. Over the years, the tools have changed, technology has changed, and the way customers interact with businesses has changed. What has not changed is the importance of good people, strong relationships, and dependable service. That is exactly the lens we are using as we begin incorporating AI into the way our office team works.

AI as a Tool, Not a Replacement

There is a lot of conversation around AI right now, and much of it centers on whether technology will replace people in the workplace. That is not how we are approaching it. Our goal is to use AI to make our employees more efficient, not to replace them.

Our office team handles a tremendous amount of work every day, including customer communication, dispatch, accounting, accounts receivable, reporting, marketing, safety, compliance, and the countless administrative tasks required to keep a busy plumbing and water cleanup company running. Some of those responsibilities require experience, judgment, problem-solving, and personal interaction. Others involve repetitive steps, compiling information, moving between systems, or completing time-consuming administrative work.

Those repetitive tasks are where we see some of the greatest opportunity. If technology can help our team complete that work faster and more accurately, it allows our employees to spend more time on the parts of their jobs that actually require their expertise and attention.

Learning Where AI in the Plumbing Industry Actually Fits

Recently, our office team completed hands-on AI training focused specifically on the work we already do every day. Rather than simply learning what AI is capable of, we worked through practical applications using our own responsibilities and processes.

During the training, our team explored ways AI could assist with daily reports, customer review responses, reconciliation preparation, accounts receivable processes, marketing content and research, and other role-specific tasks. The focus was not on changing everyone’s job. It was on identifying the parts of each job where technology might help remove unnecessary steps or make a process more efficient.

Working Smarter Without Losing the Human Element

There is a difference between asking employees to work harder and giving them the tools to work smarter. Our team already works hard, and as the company grows, the answer cannot always be to simply add more tasks to everyone’s plate.

If technology can turn a process that once took an hour into something that takes 15 or 20 minutes, the value is not that we suddenly need fewer people. The value is that an employee now has additional time and capacity to focus on something more important.

That could mean spending more time with a customer, following up on a project, handling a complex issue, supporting another department, or simply being able to focus on a task without constantly feeling pulled in multiple directions. When those efficiencies begin adding up across an entire team, they can make a meaningful difference in how the business operates.

At the end of the day, that added efficiency is not just about saving time internally. It gives our team more capacity to respond, follow up, communicate, and focus on the people we serve, which ultimately helps us provide even better service to our customers.

Efficiency Is About People, Too

Businesses naturally talk about efficiency in terms of productivity, but there is another side to it that matters just as much. Better processes can also make the employee experience better.

Repetitive administrative work can be frustrating, especially when employees are constantly moving between systems, manually compiling information, or completing the same steps over and over again. Reducing some of that workload gives people more room to focus on responsibilities where their knowledge and skills bring real value.

We believe that when employees have the right tools and resources, they are better positioned to succeed. When employees feel supported and have the capacity to do their jobs well, that ultimately carries over into the experience we provide our customers.

That is one of the biggest reasons we are interested in AI. For us, it is not about chasing the newest technology simply because it is new. It is about looking for practical ways to support the people who already make our company successful.

Evolving Without Losing Who We Are

A company that has been in business since 1962 has seen plenty of changes. New technology is nothing new, even if artificial intelligence feels different from the tools that came before it.

We do not know exactly what AI will look like five or ten years from now, and we certainly do not believe every new technology belongs in every part of our business. What we do believe is that when a tool can genuinely help our employees work more efficiently, communicate better, or serve our customers more effectively, it is worth learning how to use it well.

That is how an established company continues to grow without losing the things that made it successful in the first place. We can hold tightly to our people, our values, our reputation, and our commitment to our customers while still being open to better ways of doing the work.

For us, AI in the plumbing industry is simply the newest tool in the toolbox. The people using it are still the most important part.
