Washington County, AL

Washington County is full of rich history, southern culture and undeniable charm. Home to over 15,000 residents spread across eight communities, Washington County is proud to host local year-round events, while also providing unrivaled services to each of the communities within the county. While Washington county is now a staple in southern Alabama, the county has quite the history leading it to where it is today.

Washington County was initially settled by various indigenous people, most commonly the Choctaw. The county was formally organized on June 4, 1800, from the Tombigbee District of the Mississippi territory. The county was named after President George Washington and would later be organized in Alabama. In 1807, Aaron Burr was arrested at Wakefield in Washington county on the account of treason.

In the 1830s, the United States government forced the relocation of a majority of the Choctaw and Creek tribes to Oklahoma. In the 19th century, the county primarily exported cotton and corn, which continued into the 20th century. However, during the 20th century, the boll weevil destroyed a majority of the cotton crops. In 1984, the state of Alabama passed legislation to represent Native American interest in the state, thus bringing many Native Americans home to Washington county.

Today, Washington County is primarily involved in the timber industry but has gradually developed other industries throughout the years. The county is particularly proud of the farmers market, hosted every Saturday in the fall in Chatom, which serves as the county chair for the county.
