Professional Residential Plumbing Tip: Avoid Garbage Disposal Overuse

by Greg Smith, Roto-Rooter of Mobile

Is your garbage disposal one of the most frequently used small appliances in your kitchen? If so, that’s something that you share with many homeowners. Something else that most - if not all - homeowners have in common is the desire to keep household maintenance and repair expenses to a minimum. Unfortunately, though, it’s not uncommon for problems that arise as a result of improper garbage disposal usage to lead to plumbing repair costs that are actually quite easy to avoid.

Avoid Garbage Disposal Overuse

It is a fact that garbage disposals are handy, useful small appliances that are common to many households. It is, however, a fact not everyone who has a garbage disposal knows how to use the appliance correctly. One of the most common problems with garbage disposal usage that leads to the need for professional residential plumbing service and repair is simple overuse.

What Not to Do

You can’t just throw all of the food waste from your kitchen down your disposal - doing so can quickly lead to stopped-up drain pipes. If you peel potatoes or fresh vegetables, throw away or compost the peels - but, whatever you do, don’t put them down your disposal. The same goes for leftovers that have been in your refrigerator too long to eat. They’ll decompose if they end up in a landfill - but they’ll lead to a clogged pipe if they go down your drain.

What to Do

You should use your garbage disposal only when cleaning off plates after a meal - and then only for small particles. Just scrape small amounts of food into the drain and grind them up before putting the plates in the dishwasher. That’s it - that’s what disposals are designed to do. Using them for any other purpose constitutes overuse and could result in an unwanted plumbing repair expense that could easily have been avoided.

Proper Usage is Key

No one wants to deal with a plumbing bill that could be avoided, so it’s critical to learn what you need to know to avoid overusing your garbage disposal. Make sure that every member of your household is fully informed about when it’s okay to use the disposal and when usage should be avoided.
